Emily A. Gibson has exhibited her work at Temporary Agency, the LeRoy Neiman Gallery, Spattered Columns exhibition space, Spring Break, and the E. Tay gallery in New York City, as well as, the Revolving Museum and Berkshire Museum in New England. She has received grants from the Berkshire Taconic Foundation, and the Leopold Schepp Foundation. Gibson holds a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a MFA from the Massachusetts College of Art. As a graduate student, she received a scholarship to travel and study in Japan and China. Following graduate school, she moved to New York and set up studio space with other artists. As the recipient of a fellowship program through Studio in School she also began teaching art in the South Bronx. Other teaching posts have included work at the Cooper Hewitt Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and teaching residencies at the Guggenheim. At the City College of New York she instructed artists on the strategies for making art, as well as on the art of teaching. Gibson was born in Pennsylvania, and grew up in a town founded in the 1700's and still surrounded by Amish farmland. Her work ranges from abstractions made with salt, ink, and breaths of exhaled air to portraiture that reflects the relationships, and anonymity of the digital age.
